Every time I see this post about the map of the US versus a map of Britain, I feel the incessant urge to reblog it and say, “Actually, it all can be explained rather simply. A lot of organization in the US was done before “Americans” actually lived in those areas (let’s remember that all of this land was stolen from the native tribes/collectives/nations, anyway). For that reason, there were no issues of loyalties or population densities to straighten out, so the lines drawn were straight. You see the same thing with cities in the US that were preplanned compared to European and (relatively) old American cities. In the newer, pre-planned cities, roads are straight and residential, commercial and industrial districts are neatly separated. On the other hand, Paris is a Snail and New York is kind of a nightmare.” So instead I’m writing it here, because obviously, that post is a joke in a joke anyway.
